What is the NDA Exam?

The Joint Services academy of the Indian Armed Forces is called the National Defence Academy (NDA). An exam known as the NDA Exam is given at the national level by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). What is NDA Eligibility ?

The NDA's qualifying requirements are divided into four primary categories that candidates must meet. The following four criteria determine NDA eligibility:

NDA Eligibility Requirements: Age, Sex, and Marital Status

NDA I Age Restrictions: Only single male applicants born between July 2, 2002, and July 1, 2005, are eligible to take the NDA exam.


Only single male candidates who were born between January 2, 2003, and January 1, 2006, are eligible to take the NDA II exam.

In order to be eligible for the exam, applicants must be between the ages of 16.5 and 19.5.

Important Note – 

  • Male applicants who are married or who are female are ineligible to apply for the NDA Exam.

  • The applicant's date of birth must match the date of birth listed on the matriculation/tenth/secondary school leaving certificate.


  • After the written test results are announced, candidates must provide documents proving their age.


  • Candidates must promise not to get married before finishing all of their training. Despite passing this or any following Examinations, a candidate who marries after the date of application will not be chosen for training. A candidate who gets married while in training will be dismissed and would have to pay back all of the money the government spent on him.

NDA Eligibility – Nationality / Citizenship

Candidates must meet the NDA eligibility requirements in terms of nationality or citizenship in order to take the National Defence Academy or Naval Academy test.


Only applicants who meet the following requirements for nationality will be permitted to take the test.

a person who has lived permanently in India since before January 1, 1962, and who is either an Indian citizen, a subject of Nepal, a subject of Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee.

In order to settle permanently in India, a person of Indian descent travelled from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Zaire, Zambia, Ethiopia, and Vietnam in East Africa.

As long as an applicant who falls under categories (2), (3), (4), and (5) shows the hiring organisation a certificate of eligibility provided by the Government of India.


However, applicants who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal won't need to submit an eligibility certificate.

Eligibility for NDA – Education Qualification 


A applicant must meet a minimum level of academic requirements stipulated by the Union Public Service Commission in order to be able to take the NDA test.


To sit for the NDA/NA exam, applicants must have completed at least their 12th-grade board exam. The following is a summary of the NDA education requirements:

Education Qualification – NDA Eligibility

For the Army Wing of NDA:- a 12th-class diploma from a school that follows the 10+2 pattern of education, or an equivalent test administered by a state education board or university.


For the Indian Naval Academy's 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme, the Air Force and Naval Wings of the NDA, and


12th Class pass of the 10+2 schooling system, or an equivalent, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics tests administered by a State Education Board or a University

Important pointers – 

  • Candidates taking the Class 12th or a comparable test are eligible to apply.

  • Candidates who are taking the 11th grade test are not eligible to take this exam.

  • This exam is ineligible for candidates taking the 11th-grade exam.

  • Candidates who have not yet passed the 12th grade or an equivalent exam are permitted to apply as long as they submit proof of passing by the deadline (June 24, 2022), and no requests for extensions will be entertained on account of late board or university examination administration, a delay in the release of results, or any other reason at all.
